Siltimur or Siltimut Pepper Plant Details:

The sitimur plant is a small- to medium-sized evergreen bush or tree, reaching a height of approximately 2 to 8 meters. It has thin branches with dark green, smooth-edged, ovate or lance-shaped leaves that are a little lighter on the bottom. The leaves are about 6–12 cm long and 3–5 cm wide. When crushed, they smell nice. Small, unnoticeable yellow-green flowers grow on the plant. Usually, male and female flowers grow on different plants, and the flowers open from March to May.

The fruits are round drupes that are about 4–6 mm in diameter and ripen from July to November. When they are ready, they turn from dark red to black and smell sharp and spicy. People highly value both the fruits and the seeds for their cooking and medical uses.

Giving out in Nepal

In Nepal’s mid-hills, where it grows best in warm and temperate woods, siltimur pepper is mostly found. It grows in places that are 900–2,500 meters above sea level, usually in shady, damp places. This plant grows mostly in the central and eastern parts of Nepal, in places like Dhankuta, Ilam, and Bhojpur. Certain western areas with suitable weather conditions can also host this plant.

Significance for the environment and culture

Nepal’s village economy and traditional ways of life depend on silitmur. Locals use its seeds as a spice to give food a unique sour and spicy taste. It treats stomach problems, colds, and illnesses by killing microbes. This plant is also beneficial for the environment because it feeds animals and keeps the dirt from washing away where it grows naturally.

Siltimur, also known as Sil-Timut or Siltimut Pepper, is a fruit.

The plant Lindera neesiana Kurz, belonging to the Lauraceae family, produces Siltimur, also known as Sil-Timut or Nepalese pepper. Nepal and the nearby areas use its small, spherical, fragrant drupes for both food and medicine.

Siltimur, Sil-timut pepper fruit info;

Siltimur has a small, circular drupe fruit that is about 4–6 mm across. The smooth skin on the outside changes color as it ripens. When fully grown, it changes from green to reddish-brown to black.
The fruits grow in groups, and you can smell their sharp, spicy smell even when they’re not quite ripe. There is one seed inside each apple, covered by a thin layer of pulp. Siltimur fruits have a unique lemony, sour, and slightly spicy flavor that tastes like black pepper and lemon mixed together.

We dry the picked fruits to store and use them later. This makes them slightly smaller and darker. When crushed or ground, the fruits emit a strong smell, making them an essential component of spice mixes and seasonings.
