The sitimur plant is a small- to medium-sized evergreen bush or tree, reaching a height of approximately 2 to 8 meters. It has thin branches with dark green, smooth-edged, ovate or lance-shaped leaves that are a little lighter on the bottom. The leaves are about 6–12 cm long and 3–5 cm wide. When crushed, they smell nice. Small, unnoticeable yellow-green flowers grow on the plant. Usually, male and female flowers grow on different plants, and the flowers open from March to May.
The fruits are round drupes that are about 4–6 mm in diameter and ripen from July to November. When they are ready, they turn from dark red to black and smell sharp and spicy. People highly value both the fruits and the seeds for their cooking and medical uses.
Giving out in Nepal
In Nepal’s mid-hills, where it grows best in warm and temperate woods, siltimur pepper is mostly found. It grows in places that are 900–2,500 meters above sea level, usually in shady, damp places. This plant grows mostly in the central and eastern parts of Nepal, in places like Dhankuta, Ilam, and Bhojpur. Certain western areas with suitable weather conditions can also host this plant.
Significance for the environment and culture
Nepal’s village economy and traditional ways of life depend on silitmur. Locals use its seeds as a spice to give food a unique sour and spicy taste. It treats stomach problems, colds, and illnesses by killing microbes. This plant is also beneficial for the environment because it feeds animals and keeps the dirt from washing away where it grows naturally.
